6.Speaking
 P6:
WHY IS THE WHITE HOUSE WHITE?
We have all heard of the famous White House in Washington D.C, the official residence of the President of America, but how many of us know why it is white.
It is known that the original building was set on fire by the British during the British-American War of 1812, when the Americans fought for their independence. Later the building was restored and painted white (to hide the smoke stains on the walls), and it has kept that colour since that time as a part of American history.
The White House was designed by James Hoban in 1792. All presidents, except George Washington, have lived there. There are 132 rooms and 20 baths and showers. The largest room on the main floor is East Room; here receptions and balls are held. The famous elliptical Blue Room is for state dinners and receptions. The President and his family live on the upper floors. The President's office, the Oval Room, or the Oval Office, is in the West Wing. The East Wing is used by officials and staff members.
